Lance McGrew blogs that preparation, relaxation key during offweek

When NASCAR changed the schedule, there were some mixed emotions about having a weekend off so early in the year, but it’s a good thing if you ask me.  Just getting a minute to catch your breath after our first three races—Daytona and crisscrossing the country a couple times—it’s nice to know you can spend a little more time on day-to-day preparations.

So we’ve spent this week examining the No. 5 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet. We’re reviewing chassis adjustments we might make and studying different aero possibilities among other things. Most weeks, we’re hustling just to get ready for the upcoming race, so it’s nice to be able to take our time, review our notes from the first three races and make some changes that we think are necessary.

We’re also building a lot of new cars and spending extra time in the wind tunnel. This is also a good time for us to look at our transporters and see what needs to be modified there.

We joke that this is our week to live like normal people. Instead of flying to another racetrack, we’ll drive home every night. I’ll probably take some time off this week like many of our guys to catch up on things around the house and just relax. As part of our jobs, we spend a lot of time traveling and staying in hotels, so sleeping in my own bed will be nice, too.

We’ve started the year in a strong way. Our performance has been good, and Mark (Martin, driver of the No. 5 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet) is extremely happy with the guys as am I. In the first three races, our team has earned one top-10 finish, and we’ve completed 100 percent of the laps in those first three events. That’s remarkable when you think about the fact we had to rally from being three laps down at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway. Our crew was spot-on with crash repair, and our team’s ability to perform under pressure also made the difference in our runs at Phoenix International Raceway and Las Vegas Motor Speedway. We’re averaging a 13.5 finish, and we’re tied for seventh in points with our teammate Dale Earnhardt Jr.—all because these guys don’t give up.

We’re excited to see how the rest of the year plays out, but we aren’t necessarily looking beyond the next race. I guess that’s just how I’ve always approached it, but I just take it race to race. I try not to look too far ahead because, if you think about it, you can only focus up close or far away. And I think that’s how God intended it – our eyes can’t do both. So I choose to focus on what’s up close, and today, Bristol is the focus.
